More

This comprehensive foundation course in Focusing and listening is a combination of online (Zoom) group sessions and one long-weekend residential retreat. No prior experience of Focusing is required. The course is divided into five sections: four blocks of four weekly Zoom sessions (16 in total), between January and the end of June, plus a residential retreat on April 5th - 7th. The retreat will be held at the Purley Chase Centre, near Atherstone in Warwickshire. You are welcome to attend the introductory block of four Zoom sessions without committing upfront to the whole course if you wish. Each online group will have a maximum of five participants and all participants will be invited to come together for the in-person retreat. If the residential component is not accessible for you, it is also possible to do this section of the course online. There will be two Zoom groups running in parallel: one on Tuesday afternoons, one on Wednesday mornings and a possible third group on Wed or Thurs evening. In this small-group setting, you will find the course offers a welcoming, sensitively-held space where you feel able to turn up ‘just as you are’. Each session will include time to settle in together, some input on Focusing and companioning and Focusing time in pairs or threes. The main themes of the five course sections are:

  • An introduction to Focusing and companioning
  • The nature of the felt sense and how to receive your own and others’ experience skilfully and sensitively
  • The gifts of the body in Focusing and companioning
  • Offering suggestions in the listening role, and being with complex areas of inner experience
  • Self-criticism, ‘exile’ and Focusing in everyday life
We will explore these themes together in an experiential way, allowing plenty of time for your own input and reflections. Course fees: The cost for each block of online sessions is £120 and the long weekend residential fee is £140 (plus a donation for accommodation). Please email me for further information and booking form. I look forward to hearing from you!

More

Yes, You Can – Learn to Cope With Focusing Vacation Workshop in Greece We all know it: the sensation of feeling bogged down by everyday life: thoughts of inadequacy, endless lists of things to do, quarrels with loved-ones... Now imagine you had a tool to keep all those negative thoughts and feelings at a good distance, so that you are not overwhelmed by them, but are able to deal with life's challenges in the best possible way. What would your life feel like? Focusing is just such a tool. Basically, Focusing teaches you how to have a helpful and healing relationship with yourself and with others. You first of all learn how to put a good distance between yourself and all that is bothering you. This is a prerequisite to deal with your problems in an effective way. It's a bit like reading: you have to keep the newspaper at an appropriate distance in order to make sense of what's written. But Focusing is even more. It's a way to tap into your intuition - into that part of yourself that already knows the way forward, the appropriate next steps, the way to live a fulfilled and authentic life. In this workshop you will learn:

  • the basic steps of Focusing
  • how to keep a distance between your problems and yourself
  • how to listen to your intuition
At the same time you'll be experiencing community living, sharing in everyday tasks like cooking or washing up etc. As the workshop will take place in the mornings only, there'll be ample time to relax at the beach, go for walks or simply lie in the hammock and read a good book. Where: Kalikalos, Greece, www.kalikalos.com Price: € 575 - € 825 (includes workshop and full accomodation, including 3 vegetarian meals a day (except one evening meal when we eat in a taverna) Booking and info: u.ohse@t-online.de and friederike@kalikalos.com Info-Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gh3A91FIr5w&t=20s

Introduction to Focusing – Improving our relationship with ourselves

introductory Course

More

Focusing is a process that can enrich all areas of our lives, as it is about the very way that we attend to our experiencing. It can help us to step out of our habitual ways of relating to ourselves, others, situations and into a way of experiencing that is more nuanced, rich and alive. Focusing is a natural skill that anyone can develop and Focusing-listening partnerships are a brilliant resource for supporting our wellbeing and ongoing self exploration. Focusing could be seen as an antidote to the fast driven ways of the modern world – and perhaps can help us steer a calmer path through it! Learning Focusing can help

  • developing more of a connection with your body
  • improving your relationship with yourself
  • improving your self esteem
  • supporting you with overwhelming emotions such as anxiety
  • connecting with your intuition
The workshop will be highly experiential and will include plenty of opportunity to practice the Focusing process. There will be time to explore the concept of the ‘felt sense’ and the particular way of Focusing listening, as well as how Focusing can be used in day to day life. There is the option to complete a second workshop, then potentially four more weekend workshops which lead to a BFA Certificate in Focusing Skills. Once you have learnt this valuable process you can practice Focusing on your own or in a Focusing-listening partnership. Practising Focusing can be a lifelong skill for self awareness and support. Portals into Presence Webinar Sat 15 June 2-6pm BST

More

Over the last two years we – Wholebody Focusing trainers Cecelia Clegg and Addie van der Kooy - have presented a variety of webinars on Presence which have gained us invaluable insight into what it takes to access and sustain an experience of ‘embodied Presence’; and what gets in the way of this. Embodied Presence points to the experience of an “underlying field of alive Presence” inside you, which is totally unaffected by whatever goes on inside and around you. Based on these insights we have designed a new experiential webinar, which will take you on a step-by-step journey into a full-bodied experience of Presence or “Me Here”.  With each portal we will look at potential pitfalls, such as the way in which we habitually relate to the present moment, how we relate to our thoughts and how we assess our momentary experiences. With each step of this journey there will be plenty of time to practice what it takes to go deeper into an experience of Presence.  Each practice will be followed by an opportunity to share your experiences within the safety of a small group. This webinar is open to anyone regardless of their level of training and experience in Focusing. Some familiarity with Focusing may be helpful but is not required. Best to book swiftly as there is one place available. Date& Time:     Saturday 15thJune from 2pm till 6pm BST (including a 20 minute break) Venue: Virtual “meeting room” on Zoom platform. If you do not already have Zoom on your computer, you will be given simple instructions for downloading Zoom (free of charge) prior to the session.  Booking: The cost for the webinar is £80. More

“Stand still. The trees ahead and bushes beside you Are not lost. Wherever you are is called Here, And you must treat it as a powerful stranger, Must ask permission to know it and be known.” David Wagoner. WHAT DOES THE DAY HOLD IN STORE? When we spend any quality time in nature we meet “wildness” , something not controlled by our minds and wishes, we enter a world where we are a guest and here we can touch mystery and wisdom if we open to it. When we take our awareness inside also we meet a similar landscape - full of unknown treasures, overgrown paths and wild creatures. In each landscape if we approach with reverence, great things move towards us. Wisdom and wonder awaits. This day workshop/retreat will offer an opportunity to saunter in nature, with fresh and open senses. We will take our extraordinary human senses to bring an open heart and mind to our experience. We will sit together, and alone, in and on the land. We will walk and explore, We will share what we discover. More

This is the second process that Eugene Gendlin has developed, after Focusing. It is using Focusing to identify exactly what you know about something. It enables you to articulate what you want to say about this, in the way that only you can. Find something that you care about, that you know something about, and that you want to say something about. Discover how you can begin to communicate what you know but can’t yet formulate. This is an introductory weekend, and we will only have time to explore the first stages of the TAE process. But that is valuable in itself – it’s an adventure in thinking, Focusing, self-exploration and questioning. It’s challenging, demanding and very enjoyable. Prerequisite: Focusing Skills Course Level 2

Whole Body Focusing

Sat 31 August 2019 (7 Days)
Alex Maunder & Susan Miles
Beneath all of our stress and trauma lies an inner wellspring of intelligence and vitality that knows how to move our life situations forward. Invite your power of awareness to awaken this intuitive power of your body wisdom through the natural process of Whole Body Mindfulness. Many people are carrying great emotional pain. Suffering is fine if it can lead to a growth in understanding but pointless and cruel if it merely results in repetitive patterns of behaviour. Seeing the bigger picture: I believe that I am here, like everybody else, to learn Life’s lessons and to move forwards. That can only happen when I stop being so reactive and learn to see things from a different perspective. The deepest reason why I practice and teach Whole Body Mindfulness is that it gives me an intuitive feeling of grounding, safety and support from something much bigger than my little ego. Then my nervous system can calm down, my body feels more relaxed and alive, and I am able to step back and to see the bigger picture. Self-Responsibility is the key: From this new perspective, with mindful self-awareness, I can take responsibility for the parts of my behaviour that are clearly wrong and have contributed to any disharmony in the whole situation. These are the bits that I can change and as I do so I become more empathic about other people’s behaviour. This insight suddenly opens me up to the new possibilities that are surrounding me all of the time, but I am unable to see them due to the stress and trauma of my old reactive patterns. There is only Learning: With Whole Body Focusing it is possible to learn, to let go and to move forwards. All the pain of wanting to be right and to prove the other person wrong suddenly vanishes. There is no right or wrong anymore, there is only learning. The intuitive insights learnt are so powerful that this becomes a spiritual practice in it’s own right that naturally leads to change and activates new neural pathways. This can powerfully contribute to the ongoing process of mindful self-observation and self-transformation. Intuitive Listening: We will also explore the value of intuitive listening with Whole Body Focusing. When connected to our grounded presence, our body wisdom knows how to be with and listen to the other person in a way that we do not. Going beyond the cognitive mind and all theories to a place of pure intuitive knowing, words come that are exactly the right thing to say at the moment as a way of supporting the speaker. Combining elements of the Alexander Technique with the Inner Focusing practice developed by Eugene Gendlin, Whole Body Focusing encourages more of the body into the process of self-enquiry, increasing grounded presence and energy flow. Please note: Whole Body Focusing includes aspects of The Alexander Technique. No prior experience of this work is necessary, but some hands-on bodywork skills will be taught.

Tiered Pricing: £1080 / £820 / £670

More

Do you sense that your life is not yet expressing your deepest values and inspirations? Do you want to make changes in yourself and the world but keep getting stuck? Do you avoid or find it hard to turn towards life's challenges with creativity and kindness? WHAT DOES THE COURSE HOLD IN STORE? This is a unique opportunity to join me on a 12 week closed group course to explore what keeps us from living with full aliveness. We will delve into those aspects of our lives that "hold us back" and gently find ways to unleash the energy and power in these places. We will meet the core aspects of these tangled places (the critic, the safety guardian and the wounded one) and find new ways to befriend them. We will learn to find hidden treasure there and in the most tricky areas of our life and we will find new ways forward. Some of the themes we will explore will be:

  • Safety and resourcing
  • What holds us back
  • Resources of: presence, metaphor and precision
  • Deep empathy
  • Befriending the Critic
  • Befriending the Safety Guardian
  • Befriending the Wounded One

More

This 2 day workshop is open to anyone who wants to explore and learn about Focusing. No previous experience of Focusing is needed.

People learn Focusing for a variety of reasons, everyone is welcome to come and learn more about how Focusing can help in their day to day life

What you will Learn

You will learn to notice to sense into the body and to hear the knowing which is held in the body without being overwhelmed by what is there. You will learn how to listen to your inner self with compassion and acceptance. You will begin to learn how to guide yourself in a Focusing and how to support someone else in the Focusing process.  My workshops are based on  the Inner Relationship approach to Focusing of Ann Weiser Cornell and Barbara McGavin and also explore the work of Gene Gendlin and the origins of Focusing.

Location of Workshops

My workshops are run from a Therapy Centre in Kenilworth in Warwickshire.  The setting an old house, used as a therapy centre in Old Kenilworth. It has a lovely atmosphere and a beautiful garden, which makes for a great setting for a weekend workshop.  The venue is accessible by public transport and there is car parking close by.

More about the workshop

Focusing is a gentle but powerful approach to exploring and hearing what are inner places wish to tell us.  The workshop is limited to a maximum of 6 participants. Previous participants have told me they like the small group size and it helps create a safe space in which to explore focusing and gives the opportunity to get to know everyone at the workshop. There are opportunities for group discussion and one to one focusing sessions where you can practice and explore what you have been introduced to. My workshops run from 9.45 - 4.45 each day.

BFA Focusing Skills Certificate

This workshop is Level 1 of the BFA Focusing Skills Certificate.  It can be taken on its own as an introduction to Focusing. It is not necessary to sign up to all 5 levels to take this level. The only requirement is that the workshops are taken in order as each level builds from the previous one.

Booking

The cost for the workshop is £140.00 if booked before 15th August 2019, thereafter the cost is £160.00. If you wish to book for the workshop, I ask for a £50.00 deposit on booking to secure your place.  You can contact me via my website where you will find more information about Focusing, Me and the workshops I offer or by e mail:-  lizzie.orrell@gmail.com. If you would like more information or to talk with me about this workshop - please do get in touch.

What Previous Participants have Said about Focusing and my Workshops

I always feel welcomed, comfortable and safe on the weekends. I have learned a lot and these weekends always inspire me to look a little deeper I really appreciate how clearly everything is explained. The course notes are well set out and very clear. It is good to have something to take away and reflect on after the weekend. It was lovely to be in such an open and accepting group I have been surprised and pleased to discover how gentle focusing is

What does it mean for you to be alive? What can we feel when we let go or our "strategic mind" and open to what we do not know? What happens when we open fully to the mysterious nature of being aware and being human, here in this time and place and at the same time connected to all of life around us? What does your body know about this? What does nature know? Join me on a walk and exploration, amongst ancient beeches and the myriad of non human beings in nature enquiring into these questions and more. We will play and explore with exercises from Focusing and Nature awareness practices. We will spend time alone and together in the natural world. We will gather around the hearth and be human again. More

What can dreams tell us about our life? How can Focusing help with understanding them? Might there be a way to explore them in a new way that brings clarity and change in our lives? Focusing is all about listening to what the body has to say about our life, but every night something similar happens with our dreams. Something in us (the body/the dream maker) gives us rich, mysterious and powerful symbols, telling us not just about our life situation but how we might carry those situations forward. The dreaming body: Exploring dreams with Focusing: 5 week course begins 4th Nov 7.00-9.15pm https://www.livingfocusing.co.uk/dreams.html

No prior experience of focusing is required. The course is divided into five sections: three blocks of four Zoom sessions (12 in total) between January and the end of June, plus two residential weekend workshops on April 3th - 5th and June 19th - 21st. The residentials will be held at the Purley Chase Centre, a comfortable venue in the Warwickshire countryside. In this small-group setting, you will find the course offers a welcoming, sensitively-held space where you feel able to turn up ‘just as you are’. Each session will include time to settle in together, some input on focusing and companioning and focusing time in pairs or triads. The main themes of the five course sections are:

  • Deepening our focusing and listening
  • The gifts of the body in focusing and listening
  • Sailing with the wind!
  • Self-criticism, ‘exile’ and focusing in everyday life
We will explore these themes together in an experiential way, allowing plenty of time for your own input and reflections. Course fees: The cost for each block of online sessions is £120; the weekend residential fee is £140 (plus a donation for accommodation). Please email me for further information and booking form.
