More

Living in Authentic Connection Weekend Retreat An interconnected felt-sensing retreat for experienced focusers This is an approach I've been exploring in shorter forms for a very long time and I finally ran my first weekend this June. It was a great success and there has been interest in more so I'm putting it on again. I will still offer it at pretty low cost (mostly for the accommodation) with a sliding scale for those who can afford to make a bigger contribution. I welcome anyone with basic Focusing skills who is interested in exploring this together. What We Will Explore: (In Interconnected felt-sensing circles and in Focusing partnerships)

  • Being ourselves together - being authentically present, connected to ourselves, yet open and responsive to each other, our shared field and the wider reality beyond.
  • Being open to 'The Tragic Gap'* between how the world is and how we sense/know it could be - allowing room for our authentic feelings and responses (Staying with, yet not becoming lost in denial, panic, overwhelm and hopelessness - Letting all be present and given space).
  • Deepening our sense of our true contribution - open to what might be our right next step in offering our contribution - grounded in our authentic strengths and honest limitations.
*'The Tragic Gap' is a term coined by Parker Palmer a Quaker inspired educator who formed the Centre For Courage and Renewal in the USA - he has written a number of books including 'Healing the Heart of Democracy' and 'A Hidden Wholeness' Interconnected Felt-Sensing This is a group process centred in focusing that I've been developing for several years. Each time I have tried it has been unique, encouraging and I've been learning more each time. (I also tried a day with non focusers and it was very disappointing - which confirmed that knowing Focusing is an essential starting point!) Essentially the process involves us sitting together in a circle and listening in a Focusing way to 3 levels to:-
  • what's there inside
  • what is spoken in the group
  • the vast emergent intelligence beyond (this last comes from the radical physicist David Bohm's work and crosses readily with Gendlin's philosophy of process and environment.)
And there are a few simple guidelines to help us choose when and how to speak. My experience has been profoundly moving and left me with a uniquely wide sense of connection and belonging. That's why I want to do more! The structure of the weekend Arrival - we can arrive from mid afternoon, settle and have a simple meal together (or it's fine to arrive just in time for the evening circle) Friday evening - We will gather and have a first evening circle together with an introductory overview of the weekend and the approach and some time to introduce ourselves and get started in the group together. On Saturday we will have 2 circles one in the morning and one in the afternoon, time for Focusing and rest time which could happily be spent on a walk in the lovely nearby woods. The evening will be more unstructured offerings around the fire if it's fine this can be round an outdoor fire (I'll ask you to bring a contribution - music, a poem, a story) On Sunday we will again have some time for Focusing, have a final morning circle and finish after lunch. (The format and structure are provisional and I'm open to suggestions, improvements and adjustments) The Venue Old Litten Cottage is a lovely large thatched roof cottage in the Hampshire Countryside, near Petersfield, It's modernised with central heating, an open fire in the lounge and a large kitchen/dining area. There are 6 bedrooms so the opportunity for a private bedroom each if 6 of us - or 4 private 4 sharing if there's 8. Outside there is a lovely garden with a small patch of woodland and a view of open fields and very close by are lovely old growth woodland walks (you'll need walking boots and wet weather gear) Meals The venue is self catering so we will need to bring our own food and arrange food preparation, cleaning and washing up between us. I'll offer some guideline suggestions for what is needed and what we could each do and bring (we'll keep it simple) but there'll be some flexibility to work with what people feel moved to contribute. Low Cost Because this is still a fairly new venture for me and I gain a lot myself from running it - I'm offering on a sliding scale from £70 which just covers the venue to £120 - whatever you can afford. Plus a contribution towards the food (probabaly £20 or less). My Background Experience & The Inspiration For This I've always been drawn to groups and group work. I started teaching and facilitating in my 20s. I did a teaching qualification and have sought out and trained in many facilitation approaches. In my time I've taught Re-evaluation Co-counselling, Assertiveness and Self-Empowerment, Protective Behaviours (an Anti-Victimisation Process based on trusting your feelings) and Focusing. And I've facilitated many types of groups including identity liberation groups, Community Building Groups, Project Development groups, Work Practice Development groups and Open Space sessions for diverse and large interest groups.

The vision of this particular approach has been forming in me over the last 6 years. It's been most inspired of course by Focusing itself :-

  • that extraordinary resonance and sense of shared field many of us experience with our Focusing partners;

but also Focusing group work:-

  • Rob Foxcroft's Open Listening Circles
  • Bruce Nayowith's online Resonant Sensing for Peace circles
  • Shared Field groups
I've crossed this with a combination of;-
  • Scott Peck's Community Building approach (particularly my experience of a smaller ongoing group over several years)
  • David Bohm's Dialogue work (as introduced to me by Gill Wyatt, a Person Centred group work practitioner extending the work into the eco/synergy field)
  • Person Centred monthly community meetings (which in some ways are like a more psychological version of Quaker meetings. I had the privilege of attended a great one in my strong local Brighton Person Centred community for many years)

More

Focusing is a process that can enrich all areas of our lives, as it is about the very way that we attend to our experiencing. It can help us to step out of our habitual ways of relating to ourselves, others, situations and into a way of experiencing that is more nuanced, rich and alive. Focusing is a natural skill that anyone can develop and Focusing-listening partnerships are a brilliant resource for supporting our wellbeing and ongoing self exploration. Focusing could be seen as an antidote to the fast driven ways of the modern world – and perhaps can help us steer a calmer path through it! Learning Focusing can help

  • developing more of a connection with your body
  • improving your relationship with yourself
  • improving your self esteem
  • supporting you with overwhelming emotions such as anxiety
  • connecting with your intuition
The workshop will be highly experiential and will include plenty of opportunity to practice the Focusing process. There will be time to explore the concept of the ‘felt sense’ and the particular way of Focusing listening, as well as how Focusing can be used in day to day life. There is the option to complete a second workshop, then potentially four more weekend workshops which lead to a BFA Certificate in Focusing Skills. Once you have learnt this valuable process you can practice Focusing on your own or in a Focusing-listening partnership. Practising Focusing can be a lifelong skill for self awareness and support. More

This is a follow-up to the Focusing Skills for Life Day 1 on 16th September, or for anyone who has already had an introduction to Focusing. Focusing is Mindfulness – and more. We explore ways of being with ourselves, our experiences and emotions; improving our sense of wellbeing and physical and mental health. These are natural skills that we can rediscover and reconnect with. Non-judgemental, safe and gentle, they support us in finding insights into issues in our lives and reconnecting with the flow of life within us. As we turn to our present moment experience together, we learn ways to help guide us in creativity, decision-making and emotional wisdom. Handouts will be available. No assessment or written work is required, although you may wish to bring pen and paper for note-taking. These two day schools can be a stand-alone introduction to Focusing, and also form the first twelve hours of the 60-hour Focusing Skills course, recognised by the British Focusing Association. If you have previously attended an introduction to Focusing then you are also very welcome to join us; many people find that repeating Focusing Skills enables them to find more depth in their experience. More

This workshop follows on from my Introduction to Focusing on 23rd September. You may choose to attend this second day after having attended one of my day one workshops or if you have attended a one day Focusing Introduction with another teacher. This day two of the Introduction will provide further opportunity to consolidate your learning from day one, gain more practice with Focusing and learn about Clearing a Space. Clearing a Space is a process which can be used as a standalone practice, useful for dealing with overwhelm, or as a step within the Focusing process. We will also explore the Focusing attitude. After attending this second day of the Introduction you would be in a position to seek a Focusing partner through the BFA's Focusing partners pool. Practice of Focusing with a partner is a great way to look after yourself and cultivate a different sort of awareness. More

What can dreams tell us about our life? How can Focusing help with understanding them? Might there be a way to explore them in a new way that brings clarity and change in our lives? Focusing is all about listening to what the body has to say about our life, but every night something similar happens with our dreams. Something in us (the body/the dream maker) gives us rich, mysterious and powerful symbols, telling us not just about our life situation but how we might carry those situations forward. Whole Body Mindfulness

Sat 12 August 2017 (7 Days)
Alex Maunder & Susan Miles
Beneath all of our stress and trauma lies an inner wellspring of intelligence and vitality that knows how to move our life situations forward. Invite your power of awareness to awaken this intuitive power of your body wisdom through the natural process of Whole Body Mindfulness. Many people are carrying great emotional pain. Suffering is fine if it can lead to a growth in understanding but pointless and cruel if it merely results in repetitive patterns of behaviour. Seeing the bigger picture: I believe that I am here, like everybody else, to learn Life’s lessons and to move forwards. That can only happen when I stop being so reactive and learn to see things from a different perspective. The deepest reason why I practice and teach Whole Body Mindfulness is that it gives me an intuitive feeling of grounding, safety and support from something much bigger than my little ego. Then my nervous system can calm down, my body feels more relaxed and alive, and I am able to step back and to see the bigger picture. Self-Responsibility is the key: From this new perspective, with mindful self-awareness, I can take responsibility for the parts of my behaviour that are clearly wrong and have contributed to any disharmony in the whole situation. These are the bits that I can change and as I do so I become more empathic about other people’s behaviour. This insight suddenly opens me up to the new possibilities that are surrounding me all of the time, but I am unable to see them due to the stress and trauma of my old reactive patterns. There is only Learning: With Whole Body Mindfulness it is possible to learn, to let go and to move forwards. All the pain of wanting to be right and to prove the other person wrong suddenly vanishes. There is no right or wrong anymore, there is only learning. The intuitive insights learnt are so powerful that this becomes a spiritual practice in it’s own right that naturally leads to change and activates new neural pathways. This can powerfully contribute to the ongoing process of mindful self-observation and self-transformation. Intuitive Listening: We will also explore the value of intuitive listening with Whole Body Mindfulness. When connected to our grounded presence, our body wisdom knows how to be with and listen to the other person in a way that we do not. Going beyond the cognitive mind and all theories to a place of pure intuitive knowing, words come that are exactly the right thing to say at the moment as a way of supporting the speaker. Combining elements of the Alexander Technique with the Inner Focusing practice developed by Eugene Gendlin, Whole Body Mindfulness encourages more of the body into the process of self-enquiry, increasing grounded presence and energy flow. Please note: Whole Body Mindfulness includes aspects of The Alexander Technique. No prior experience of this work is necessary, but some hands-on bodywork skills will be taught.

Tiered Pricing: £1080 / £820 / £670

More

Your physically-felt body is, in fact, part of a gigantic system of here and other places, now and other times, you and other people, in fact the whole universe. This sense of being bodily alive in a vast system is the body as it is felt from inside. When we pay attention to what is alive in us, we don't just feel what's "our stuff" :- our feelings and troubles. We feel is what it is like to be alive in this world right now... and the scope of this is vast. We can sense connections to our larger world, and the issues it faces. We might sense a connection to nature. We might feel a connection to our ancestors and cultural history. On this experiential weekend we will explore both how to access this bigger connectedness, some of the obstacles on the way and some of the themes we will encounter when we do: Connections to nature and the web of life Connections to the calling of the world Connections to deeper values and callings Connections to our ancestors and unresolved trauma Open to any with at least one weekends experience of Focusing and listening Venue: Fulcrum House, 3 Grove Road, Redland, Bristol. BS6 6UJ Dates and Times: June 10-11 2017, 10am–5pm Saturday, 10am-4.30pm Sunday. Costs: £130

More

We explore ways of being with ourselves, our experiences and emotions; improving our sense of wellbeing and physical and mental health. These are natural skills that we can rediscover and reconnect with. Non-judgemental, safe and gentle, they support us in finding insights into issues in our lives and reconnecting with the flow of life within us. Handouts will be available; no assessment or written work is required, although you may wish to bring pen and paper for note-taking. This day school can be a stand-alone introduction to Focusing, and it also forms the first six hours of the 60-hour Focusing Skills course, recognised by the British Focusing Association. Focusing With The Whole Body – Relational Embodiment – International Training

More

A way to live, to work, to heal... Focusing With The Whole Body - Relational Embodiment International Training 2016/17 Module 1: September 22-25. 2016, Module 2: November 3-6. 2016, Module 3: January 19-22.2017, Module 4: March 9-12. 2017 Presented by Astrid Schillings Hawkwood College, Stroud, UK Focusing With The Whole Body opens the door to the deeper nature of change. We will explore fresh and direct ways of sensing how all life is fundamentally inter-related:  our living bodies, the environment, nature and our embodied awareness. By inviting our felt sense of grounding in this wider sense of being, we subtly develop the living space in a conscious whole-body way. We may experience how we are more than our reactive patterns, the stress of life or challenging, even traumatic, issues. We will experiment with a sensitive listening awareness, within ourselves and person-to-person. That creates space for inner directed purposeful movement coming from the living body itself. This is how life carries forward from itself in sometimes surprising ways – finding just the right next step. Our concepts about effort, ease or dis-ease may radically shift. Insights into how to live, work and heal in your own unique way may arise.   Professionals – psychotherapists, body therapists, members of social professions and coaches will find this training  broadening and deepening their own work, as well as enhancing their sense of authentic being in the world. What to expect: The Module 1 – 4 September 2016 – March 2017

  • The foundation of Focusing Wth The Whole Body will be explored and practiced in depth. Some experietially grounded theory will help to spark insight.
  • Discovering the Pause as an access into the dimension of direct bodily knowing, which is deeper than the concepts of our “knowing mind”.
  • In deep listening we will explore the living human body as dynamic awareness.
  • Embodied Dialogue – A relational practice that consciously invites the living process person to person, human body to human body -  in groups or pairs.  It is rooted in Focusing With The Whole Body, David Bohm`s Dialogue, a participatory spiritual practice as well as Interactive-Focusing by Janet Klein and Mary Mc Guire.
While this training is whole in itself and can be completed with a practitioner Certificate – part two will be offered in 2017 to unfold applications in Focusing With The Whole Body Therapy. The following explorations will be offered: Transforming structure bound process, Meanings of trauma, Is there room for spiritual grounding in therapy and, if so, how to offer it with integrity?  There will also be retreat-workshops on Co-creating with Nature, Embodied Spirituality: The Ground beneath the Ground and more. Some experience of Focusing is highly recommending before attending the Training. If you need tuition please contact a Focusing-trainer. Information and registration: astrid.schillings@focusinginstitute.eu Maymay Knight knight.maymay@gmail.com www.focusing-institut.eu - contact/sessions FWB via skype or phone.   Astrid Schillings: Focusing came into her life in 1981, when a student of Person Centred psychology. It resonated deeply with her wondering what it is to be human, why we are here. In that spirit she became a Psychotherapist/Psychologist. She has been exploring and teaching extensively on the interface of Sensitive Body-Awareness (Mindfulness, Somatic Experiencing, Qi Gong, Authentic Movement, Feldenkrais). It took her years to let her entry into Focusing With Whole Body carry forward beyond any traditional setting. Encountering Kevin McEvenue all her previous understandings shifted again. She teaches - professionals, therapists and everybody interested - internationally as well as in her training centre in Cologne. She lives in part-time retreat in Scotland. She has been in ongoing conversation with Gene Gendlin on his extended understanding of the living body.   Location of the training: www.hawkwoodcollege.co.uk Prices include food, tea/coffea, workspaces, lodging. The day will be largely experiential.  Handouts will be available.  No assessment or written work is required. You can book at the Canterbury Christchurch website: http://www.canterbury.ac.uk/cae/event-details.aspx?instance=116403 There will be a follow-up day on Saturday 18th February at Manor Barn, Canterbury.  Please book this day directly with me: csamuels@carolannsamuels.co.uk or call on 07757 854 111.

Freedom from self criticism Many of us are plagued and crippled by what we call our "inner critic" We ignore it, threaten it, shout at it... but does this really work? We may feel at war with ourselves or at worst self hatred. Can we find a new way to relate to this aspect of human experience? Can we find peace with ourselves? Using Focusing to sense for social change. This will be a day's workshop on Focusing for social change. We will be looking at blocks to caring and becoming involved as well as sensing inside for how to move forward with current involvement and sensing for new direction. We will aim to get a sense of the group as a whole and how a group might start to build collectively. Some previous Focusing experience (such as a couple of Focusing sessions with myself or another Focusing practitioner or a weekend introductory course or some other Focusing practice) would be helpful. This is a donation-based session in London. No-one turned away for lack of funds. Please email me (Alex Brew) with your reasons for wanting to be involved.

More

This 5-day retreat will be co-led by Gordon Adam and Kay Hoffmann, and offers an opportunity for rest, reflection and renewal at the year’s end after the busyness of Christmas. The retreat will provide a safe, supportive and nourishing environment, with space to form a deeper connection with yourself, with others and with nature. It is open to people of all levels of Focusing experience. There will time each day for: •1-1 Focusing sessions •Input and discussion on Focusing practice •Wholebody Focusing input & practice •Silent group walks •Group meditation •Early morning yoga or qigong •Group sharing •Free time for resting, walking, etc. •Delicious meals cooked by our resident chef The retreat will be held partly in silence, but there will also be time to interact socially with the group. Other activities such as Wye Valley walks, dance/movement, massage, poetry sharing, etc, may arise on the retreat. We will also celebrate the turning of the year. The retreat schedule is offered as a framework and support, but there is no obligation or pressure to attend every session and participants are encouraged to attune to and respect their own individual process and needs, which can include spending time alone. The retreat venue is Poulstone Court – a large Victorian country house set in the heart of the beautiful Herefordshire countryside, only 10 minutes walk from the River Wye. The house is warm and comfortable and has been a retreat centre for many years. Both the house and the surroundings are tranquil, spacious, and supportive of silence and deepening. Accommodation is mainly in shared (2-4 bed) rooms, but there are several single rooms available at slightly higher cost. There are 3 large group spaces enabling us to offer different sessions simultaneously, to meet different needs or interests. Poulstone Court is a 75 minute drive from Bristol or a 3 hour drive from London. The nearest railway station is at Hereford, a 30 minute drive from Poulstone Court. For further details see www.poulstone.com Gordon Adam and Kay Hoffmann are both experienced Focusers with 28 years of Focusing experience between them. Kay teaches Focusing and listening from introductory level to practitioner training. She especially enjoys sharing the lightness and spaciousness of the Wholebody Focusing approach and combining Focusing with yoga and meditation. Gordon has been running residential Focusing retreats in the Southwest for the last 7 years, and has a background in Buddhist practice and Interactive Inquiry. His particular interest is in using Focusing, meditation & qigong to connect with ‘the bigger picture’. The cost of the retreat is £400 (shared room); £460 (single room); £360 (concession). Bookings are accepted on receipt of a completed booking form and a deposit of £100. See www.newportclinic.co.uk/classes-events/focusing-retreats/ for more information about this and other Focusing retreats and feedback from past retreat participants. introductory Course

More

This is a workshop for artists who want to improve their practice using the experiential practice known as 'Focusing' developed by contemporary philosopher Eugene Gendlin. Focusing allows you to connect fully with yourself and by doing so everything around you. This helps you see better, be more in touch with 'imagination' and  'unconscious', become more interested in the line - and get through those obstacles to making art work. Focusing has been used to help people develop theories, ideas, poetry - and artwork. During the class you will learn how to incorporate Focusing into your art practice. We will start to find ways into and learn some of the basic principles while developing new ways of approaching art-making through guided practice. This one day workshop costs £30 per person. There are some concessions slots available which cost £10 for the day. A vegan lunch will be available for £5. Please bring your own art materials and board (we will be working on drawings in pencil, colour pencil, chalk, oil pastel, ink or watercolour). Please contact me (Alex Brew) on alexandbrew [at]  gmail.com with what you're currently working on and why you would like to attend. More information on art and Focusing can be found on my blog: https://drawingonfocusing.wordpress.com

The dreaming body – Focusing and dreams

specialist Course

October 31st to December 5th 2016 What can dreams tell us about our life? How can Focusing help with understanding them?...

More

October 31st to December 5th 2016 What can dreams tell us about our life? How can Focusing help with understanding them? Might there be a way to explore them in a new way that brings clarity and change in our lives?

Focusing is all about listening to what the body has to say about our life, but every night something similar happens with our dreams. Something in us (the body/the dream maker) gives us rich, mysterious and powerful symbols, telling us not just about our life situation but how we might carry those situations forward. Some of the themes we will explore:
Gendlin’s dream questions Working with Story, place and character Meeting difficult dreams Finding new life and growth from dreams We will be basing much of what we do on Eugene Gendlin's book 'Let Your Body Interpret Your Dreams'. As usual there there will be plenty of time for Focusing practice and exploring issues and themes. Open to anyone with at least two days Focusing experience Each week we have teaching input, practice time in pairs and demonstrations. I will have at least one session with each participant during the course.

Dates and times:
Starts 31st October, ends 5th December
7.15 to 9.45pm
 £100 per person

You will need to have attended an introductory weekend or equivalent to book. You will also need an good internet connection and a skype account.
