The British Focusing Association (formerly British Focusing Teachers Association) or an equivalent body has certified all the Focusing Teachers on this web site, and the Focusing Institute also certifies many of our members. We encourage our teachers to develop their own style of teaching and we hope you will eventually learn from more than one teacher. We also encourage Focusing Teachers to keep up to date with developments and undertake continuing professional development, to receive peer consultative support for their work and to attend an annual meeting offering continuing professional development and peer consultative support. We award our certificate after an extensive period of training and we ask practitioners and teachers to sign up to BFA’s code of ethics and take out professional indemnity insurance, but we do not monitor their ongoing practice. It is up to you to check their current position on these with any teacher at the time you engage with them. On principle BFA does not require Focusing Teachers to be psychotherapists. Focusing is a human process accessible to anyone and applicable in many fields, and people from many walks of life may become Focusing Teachers. Some BFA Focusing Teachers are also Focusing Oriented Therapists and some were trained as psychotherapists before learning to teach Focusing. If you want a psychotherapist, whether Focusing Oriented or otherwise, or any other type of therapist who is also a Focusing Teacher, it is up to you to determine their credentials, to check their professional affiliations and qualifications and to decide whether this is the right person for you. BFA is not qualified to accredit psychotherapy practitioners, nor to recommend any therapeutic method over any other.
